📖 History
Originally a small fishing village known as Edo (江戸), Tokyo became the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate in the early 17th century and rapidly grew into one of the world's largest cities. In 1868, during the Meiji Restoration, the Imperial Court moved from Kyoto to Edo, which was renamed Tokyo (東京), meaning "Eastern Capital."
The city has endured devastating earthquakes, wartime destruction and rapid modernisation while preserving many of its cultural traditions. Today, Tokyo is recognised as one of the world's leading centres of business, technology, fashion, cuisine and popular culture.
