π History
Tokyo Tower officially opened on 23 December 1958 during Japan's rapid period of post-war economic growth. Designed by architect TachΕ« NaitΕ, the tower was built primarily as a broadcasting tower to support the country's expanding television industry.
At 333 metres tall, it became the tallest structure in Japan at the time, surpassing the Eiffel Tower by 13 metres. The tower quickly became a national symbol of Japan's recovery, technological progress and modernisation.
Although many broadcasting services have since moved to Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower continues to operate as a communications facility while welcoming millions of visitors each year.
