πŸ“– History

Construction of Tokyo Skytree began in 2008 to replace the ageing Tokyo Tower as the primary broadcasting tower for the Tokyo region. Rapid urban development and the construction of increasingly taller buildings had begun to interfere with television signals, creating the need for a much taller broadcasting facility.

The tower officially opened to the public on 22 May 2012. Designed by architect Nikken Sekkei, its elegant shape combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern engineering. The height of 634 metres was deliberately chosen because the numbers can be read as Musashi, the historic name of the region that once included modern-day Tokyo.

Today, Tokyo Skytree serves both as a broadcasting tower and one of Japan's most visited tourist attractions.
