History
Kabukichō was developed after World War II as part of Tokyo's post-war reconstruction. Originally intended to become a traditional kabuki theatre district, those plans were never realised. However, the proposed theatre gave the area its name, with Kabukichō literally meaning "Kabuki Town".
Instead, the district evolved into a major entertainment precinct, filled with cinemas, restaurants, bars and nightlife venues. Over the decades, Kabukichō has become one of Tokyo's best-known destinations, appearing in countless films, television shows and video games.
Today, ongoing redevelopment has transformed much of the district, introducing modern attractions such as Tokyu Kabukicho Tower while preserving the vibrant atmosphere that has made Kabukichō famous around the world.
