The Imperial Palace (ηε± , KΕkyo) is the primary residence of the Emperor of Japan and one of Tokyo's most significant historical landmarks. Situated on the former site of Edo Castle, the palace occupies approximately 115 hectares of beautifully landscaped grounds surrounded by moats, stone walls and gardens in the Marunouchi district of central Tokyo.
Although much of the palace grounds are closed to the public, visitors can explore the scenic East Gardens, admire the iconic Nijubashi Bridge and stroll around the surrounding moat, offering a peaceful escape from Tokyo's bustling city centre.

π History
The Imperial Palace stands on the site of Edo Castle (ζ±ζΈε), which served as the headquarters of the Tokugawa shogunate from the early 17th century until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.
Following the restoration of imperial rule, Emperor Meiji moved the Imperial Court from Kyoto to Tokyo, and the former Edo Castle became the Imperial Palace. Much of the original palace buildings were destroyed by fire in 1873, while additional damage occurred during World War II. The present Imperial Palace was completed in 1968, combining modern construction with traditional Japanese architectural design.
Today, the palace remains the official residence and administrative centre of the Imperial Family and hosts numerous state ceremonies throughout the year.
